How We Research
Every guide on 10 Top Rated Reviews starts with one question: will this product fit the way you print or make things at home? A printer for family photos has different needs from one for shipping labels, fabric projects or everyday documents.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the project and the workspace
A photo printer may not be the right fit for frequent worksheets. A sublimation setup also needs compatible supplies and a heat press, while a label project may call for a cutter or laminator.
We consider what you plan to make, how often you will use the product, the space available and your budget. When a choice depends on the paper, ink, device or material you already own, we explain what to check.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the details makers list, such as print size and resolution, speed, connectivity, ink type, supported media, scanner features, machine capacity and what comes in the box.
For supplies and accessories, we consider compatibility, size and intended use. Makers describe products in their own words, so we name the brand for product claims and note the warranty terms it lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, such as setup problems, paper jams, high ink use, color issues, difficult software or supplies that do not fit as expected.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A printer suited to photos may score lower in a guide for crafts, labels or low-cost document printing.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers may sell similar models under close names, so we check the model name and listed features, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are based on research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
